Blessed are the Meek

“Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.”

Matthew 5: 1-12, the Beatitudes

In the Old Testament, this meant inherit the promised land. The meek are those who have self-control and have gentleness; they may not have a lot of resources like the poor; They don't oppress, are not violent, don't have hearts filled with malice; are not violent or seek revenge. This doesn't mean they let people walk all over them, but it does mean they learned to live like Jesus with humility and do put the needs of those who are less fortunate and the oppressed come first.

How do we achieve a life like this? We ask the Holy Spirit to fill our lives with the fruit of the Spirit. By filling our hearts with love, peace, joy, self-control, humility, etc - and ask every day to renew our hearts with these fruit, we will begin to see life not through our self-centered lenses. By beginning to put ourselves second and serving others we will see that God does have a purpose and my life isn't a waste.

Ask God today to fill your life with self-control and gentleness.
